DJ a:MAR:a / AMARA
a:mar:a , also known as “Mar” amongst her friends, first spun records while choreographing for Strictly United, a dance group she co-founded in high school. She was frustrated with limiting her dance moves to monotonous single song soundtracks so she decided to learn the art of deejaying enabling her to manipulate and mix several songs so she could better coordinate dance routines. The group performed at talent shows and danced for up-and-coming rap groups, performing at The Greek Theatre and local bars/clubs in the Los Angeles/San Gabriel Valley areas.
It was during these old school days, while still in high school, that she used her entrepreneurial skills, throwing parties at Masonic Temples and bars in the Los Angeles area. Independent and resourceful, a:mar:a designed her own fliers, hiring friends as bouncers and recruiting then unknown DJs such as DJ Icey Ice (Power 92.3, Stacks, Legend Entertainment) to rock her parties. These events gained widespread popularity, drawing crowds from San Diego and San Francisco. This was a pivotal point for her, gaining invaluable connections to different people and aspects of the music and party industry.
a:mar:a put her musical interests on the back burner while she pursued her education and in turn becoming a Systems Engineer. She still found time to get behind the decks, helping out mobile DJ friends when house parties were the place to be. After graduating with a Bachelor’s Degree in Information Technology, she vowed to return and pursue her passion for music on a higher level. Her first paycheck was spent on her first set of Technics 1200s. Since then, she has spent time finding her groove and jumping back into the game, introducing her blend of electronic dance and house music to popular clubs, such as Muse and Domenico’s, where primarily only Top 40 hits were in rotation. Her style, charisma, and energy quickly enlightened club owners and promoters to her style of dance music, showing it to be the new sound and her time has come.
a:mar:a’s diverse musical taste creates a unique blend of sounds that leaves no dance floor empty. With her signature set, she has the flexibility to take you on a journey, a mesmerizing trip. Starting off, sooths you into a loungin’ mood with her seductive beats. Next stop, effortlessly takes you to on an elevated state with her wicked style of deep and rhythmic electronica sounds tipped with soul, jazz, funk, and breaks, but without a doubt, notoriously fused with entrancing vocals.
Rockin’ the crowds with her flawless mixing and powerful party presence, this attracted renowned DJ, producer, and record label manager, Matt Mau and Eric Lee (White Label Group, Journees). The duo saw a great star in the making and soon had her doing weekly shows at The Standard, a swank lounge in Los Angeles working the decks amongst prominent House Djs, David Alvarado, Matt Mau, and KCRW’s own Raul Campos. A collaboration quickly followed, working as an Associate Producer for a long awaited CD, Lifted (Live in Buenos Aires), which sold out even before its official release date. With up and coming shows in New York and other projects in the works, a:mar:a has the skills, innovation, and perseverance to have a lasting presence in this industry. With a humble outlook on life, her aura emanates an energetic, positive spirit that is truly contagious.
